Life and Witness

Bishop of Amathus

Saint Tychon was born in Amathus on Cyprus to Christian parents. While helping in his father's bakery, he gave bread freely to the poor, trusting that God would not abandon those who showed mercy.

He was ordained deacon and priest and later became Bishop of Amathus. He worked to uproot idolatry, teach the Gospel and care for the people entrusted to him.

The Granary and the Vine

When his father objected that the stores had been emptied through almsgiving, Tychon asked him to inspect the granary. The tradition says it was miraculously filled with wheat, confirming that charity offered in faith is not forgotten by God.

A second beloved account concerns dry vine cuttings planted by the saint. They took root, grew and bore sweet grapes. The vine remained associated with his memory and with the blessing of the faithful.

Feast Day

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition

Tychon's episcopal ministry at Amathus and his Christianization of the local community belong to the ecclesiastical history and memory of Cyprus. The overflowing granary, living vine and other wonders are reported as Cypriot Synaxarion traditions; present shrines and relic claims require confirmation from the responsible local Church and are not inferred from similarly named saints.
