Life and Witness

Life and Historical Setting

Saint Sampson was born in Rome and trained as a physician. After giving away his inheritance, he went to Constantinople, where he opened his home to the sick, the poor and strangers, treating them without payment. He was ordained to the priesthood and, after healing Emperor Justinian, asked that a hospice be built for those in need. The Church honors him among the unmercenary healers.

Miracles, Relics and Places of Veneration

Constantinople was the center of his medical and charitable ministry, and the hospice associated with his name continued serving the sick after his repose. The original complex has not survived intact, so its history is distinguished from later churches dedicated to him.

Iconography and Spiritual Meaning

The saint's icon presents a transfigured human person whose holiness is the gift of God. The spiritual lesson is drawn from the received life and worship of the Church, not from invented moral anecdotes.

Feast Day

June 27 — Saint Sampson the Hospitable.

From the Orthodox Synaxarion

The Prologue from Ohrid remembers Sampson as both physician and priest. After healing Emperor Justinian he asked not for wealth but for a hospice, turning imperial gratitude into enduring care for the sick, poor and stranger.

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition

The Constantinopolitan tradition firmly associates Sampson with medicine, priestly service, hospitality and an institution caring for the sick and poor. His healing of Emperor Justinian and the imperial foundation of a hospice are presented through the Synaxarion, while the documented history of the later Sampson xenon is distinguished from every detail of the saint's personal life.
