Life and Witness

Life and Historical Setting

Saint Sisoes lived in the Egyptian desert during the fourth and fifth centuries, dwelling for many years on the mountain where Saint Anthony the Great had struggled. Through strict asceticism, prayer and humility, he received spiritual gifts and guided those who came to him. At his repose, the brethren saw his face shine as he spoke of the saints and angels coming to receive his soul.

Miracles, Relics and Places of Veneration

His long ascetic life is associated with the mountain of Saint Anthony in the Egyptian desert. His famous icon before the tomb of Alexander the Great is a spiritual meditation on death and humility, not a claim that the two men met historically.

Iconography and Spiritual Meaning

The saint's icon presents a transfigured human person whose holiness is the gift of God. The spiritual lesson is drawn from the received life and worship of the Church, not from invented moral anecdotes.

From the Orthodox Synaxarion

The Prologue from Ohrid preserves the desert father’s profound humility even at the approach of death. Though the brethren saw his face shine, Sisoes continued to ask for time to repent, teaching that holiness never abandons humility.

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition

The Sayings of the Desert Fathers and the received monastic tradition are the proper sources for Sisoes's ascetic teaching, humility and ministry on Saint Anthony's mountain. The famous icon of him lamenting before the tomb of Alexander the Great expresses a later Orthodox meditation on death; it is not evidence that Sisoes met Alexander or stood before an archaeologically identified tomb.
