Life and Witness

Life and Historical Setting

Before his conversion, Saint Prokopios was a Roman commander named Neanias. On the road to Alexandria he received a vision of the radiant Cross and heard the voice of Christ. He confessed the Savior, endured imprisonment and many torments, and completed his witness by martyrdom.

Miracles, Relics and Places of Veneration

Caesarea in Palestine is the center of his martyrdom tradition. The Synaxarion preserves the conversion of his mother and fellow confessors; later relic traditions are numerous and are not combined into an artificial single itinerary.

Iconography and Spiritual Meaning

Orthodox iconography presents the saint with the Cross of confession. The image does not glorify suffering by itself; it proclaims fidelity to Christ, forgiveness of persecutors and the victory of resurrection over death.

Feast Day

July 8 — Great Martyr Prokopios of Caesarea.

From the Orthodox Synaxarion

The Prologue from Ohrid recounts the conversion of Neanias through the revelation of the Cross and the voice of Christ. As Prokopios he turned from imperial service against Christians to confession, endurance and martyrdom for the Savior.

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition

The Great Martyr's pre-baptismal name Neanias, vision of the Cross, conversion and martyrdom at Caesarea form the developed Orthodox passion. Variant forms of the ancient martyr tradition exist, including traditions surrounding an earlier Procopius of Caesarea; the page follows the liturgical identity of July 8 without collapsing distinct textual witnesses into a single modern biography.
