Life and Witness
Life and Historical Setting
Saint Macrina was raised in the Scriptures and dedicated herself to God. She guided her family toward the ascetic life, established a community of women and, at her repose, confessed the Church's hope in resurrection and eternal life.
Miracles, Relics and Places of Veneration
Her ascetic community at Annisa in Pontus and Saint Gregory of Nyssa's account of her life are the primary historical setting. Her authentic spiritual legacy is preserved especially through Gregory's Life of Macrina and dialogue On the Soul and the Resurrection.
Iconography and Spiritual Meaning
The saint's icon presents a transfigured human person whose holiness is the gift of God. The spiritual lesson is drawn from the received life and worship of the Church, not from invented moral anecdotes.
Feast Day
July 19 — Saint Macrina the Younger.
From the Orthodox Synaxarion
The Prologue from Ohrid remembers Macrina as the elder sister and spiritual teacher within a family of saints. Her formation in Scripture, leadership of a women’s ascetic community and peaceful confession at death reveal mature Christian wisdom.
Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition
Saint Gregory of Nyssa's Life of Macrina and dialogue On the Soul and the Resurrection are the principal near-contemporary witnesses to his sister's life, community and final days. Her influence is therefore grounded in an identifiable fourth-century source, while later devotional expansions and generalized miracle claims are not allowed to displace Gregory's testimony.
