Life and Witness

Life and Historical Setting

George was a soldier who openly confessed Christ during the persecution of Diocletian. He endured torture with steadfast faith and was beheaded, becoming one of the most beloved martyrs of the Church.

Miracles, Relics and Places of Veneration

The principal ancient shrine is the Orthodox Church of Saint George at Lydda, modern Lod, traditionally associated with his tomb. His relics and dedications spread widely, but the dragon narrative is presented as later iconographic and hagiographical tradition, not as the central historical account of his martyrdom.

Iconography and Spiritual Meaning

Orthodox iconography presents the saint with the Cross of confession. The image does not glorify suffering by itself; it proclaims fidelity to Christ, forgiveness of persecutors and the victory of resurrection over death.

Feast Day

April 23 — Saint George the Great Martyr.

From the Orthodox Synaxarion

The Orthodox Synaxarion remembers Saint George as a native of Cappadocia and a distinguished military commander. When the persecution of Christians intensified under Diocletian, he openly confessed Christ before the emperor and remained steadfast through repeated torments, receiving the crown of the Great Martyr.

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition

George's early and widespread cult as a military martyr of the Diocletian persecution is historically well attested, while the detailed passion survives in multiple and often legendary forms. The dragon episode is a later symbolic narrative and is identified as such; it does not replace the martyr's confession, and modern military or national uses of his image are not projected back into the ancient sources.
