Life and Witness

The Virgin of Kythira

Saint Elesa belongs to the local Orthodox tradition of Kythira. She was raised in a wealthy pagan household but desired to dedicate her life to Christ in virginity and prayer.

Leaving the security of her home, she traveled to Kythira and settled on the mountain that would later bear her name.

Asceticism and Martyrdom

Elesa lived in prayer with companions, seeking freedom for Christian ascetic life. Her father pursued her and demanded that she return.

She refused to abandon Christ and was killed, receiving the martyr's crown according to the island's ecclesiastical tradition.

Monastery and Feast

The Monastery of Saint Elesa on Kythira preserves the place of her veneration and remains a destination for local pilgrimage. Traditions of healing and protection are connected with prayer at her shrine.

August 1 — Holy Virgin Martyr Elesa of Kythira.

From the Orthodox Synaxarion

The ecclesiastical tradition of Kythira remembers Saint Elesa’s desire for the ascetic life and her refusal to abandon Christ. Her local veneration centers on the place of her martyrdom and the steadfast confession for which she is honored.

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition

Elesa's life is preserved chiefly in the local ecclesiastical tradition of Kythira rather than in an abundant early documentary record. Her flight, ascetic settlement and death at her father's hand are therefore attributed to that tradition; the monastery and continuing island veneration are reported as verifiable features of the living cult, without adding unauthenticated miracle stories.
