Life and Witness

Life and Historical Setting

Saint Christina came to know the true God while still young and rejected the idols kept by her pagan father. She endured imprisonment and many torments, remained faithful to Christ and completed her course in martyrdom.

Miracles, Relics and Places of Veneration

Tyre is the traditional setting of her contest. Later accounts differ in the ordering and number of her torments, so their shared confession of steadfast faith is given greater weight than attempts to harmonize every narrative detail.

Iconography and Spiritual Meaning

Orthodox iconography presents the saint with the Cross of confession. The image does not glorify suffering by itself; it proclaims fidelity to Christ, forgiveness of persecutors and the victory of resurrection over death.

Feast Day

July 24 — Great Martyr Christina of Tyre.

From the Orthodox Synaxarion

The Prologue from Ohrid recounts Christina’s rejection of the idols kept by her father and her distribution of their precious materials to the poor. Her youthful confession remained firm through repeated torments and changes of governor.

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition

Christina's confession at Tyre and martyrdom are preserved in ancient but elaborated martyrological traditions with variant geographical and narrative details. The destruction of idols, successive tortures and wonders are therefore identified as Synaxarion testimony, while the article avoids manufacturing a precise chronology unsupported by the witnesses.
