Life and Witness
Prophet of Moresheth
The Prophet Micah came from Moresheth in Judah and prophesied during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. He confronted injustice, corrupt leadership and worship emptied of righteousness.
His words combine severe warning with hope in God's mercy. Micah teaches that the Lord seeks justice, mercy and humble walking with God rather than religious display without repentance.
The Prophecy of Bethlehem
Micah foretold that the ruler of Israel would come from Bethlehem. The Gospel of Matthew cites this prophecy when the chief priests answer Herod concerning the birthplace of the Messiah.
The Orthodox Church therefore receives Micah as a prophet of the Incarnation and reads his words in the light of Christ.
Repose and Feast
The precise circumstances of Micah's death are not securely preserved, and he should not be confused with the earlier Micaiah son of Imlah. Ecclesiastical tradition honors his prophetic ministry and burial in his native region.
August 14 — Holy Prophet Micah.
From the Orthodox Synaxarion
The Prologue from Ohrid remembers Micah as the prophet who rebuked injustice and announced the coming ruler from Bethlehem. His prophecy is received by the Church in the light of the Nativity of Christ.
Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition
The canonical Book of Micah is the primary source for the prophet of Moresheth, his denunciation of injustice and his prophecy concerning Bethlehem. He must be distinguished from Micaiah son of Imlah in 1 Kings 22; later accounts of Micah's death and burial are treated cautiously because the ecclesiastical witnesses do not preserve one uniform historical narrative.
