Life and Witness

Life and Historical Setting

The Prophet Ezekiel ministered among the exiles in Babylon. God granted him visions of divine glory, called him to summon Israel to repentance, and showed him the dry bones restored to life as a prophetic sign of resurrection.

Miracles, Relics and Places of Veneration

His ministry belongs to the Jewish exile in Babylon and is known first from the canonical Book of Ezekiel. Sites identified as his tomb belong to long local traditions that are not uniform; Scripture remains the controlling source for his prophecy and visions.

Iconography and Spiritual Meaning

The prophet is normally depicted holding a scroll. Orthodox interpretation reads the prophetic ministry within Holy Scripture and in the light of Christ, without reducing it to predictions detached from repentance and covenant faithfulness.

Feast Day

July 23 — Holy Prophet Ezekiel.

From the Orthodox Synaxarion

The Orthodox reading of Ezekiel receives his visions within the Church’s proclamation of Christ. The valley of dry bones is especially heard as a prophetic image of resurrection, while the vision of divine glory calls the faithful to repentance and hope.

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition

The canonical Book of Ezekiel is the controlling source for the prophet's exile, call, symbolic actions, visions and proclamation of restoration. Traditions about his manner of death, tomb and later relic history are separated from Scripture; Orthodox interpretation reads the valley of dry bones and the closed gate christologically within worship without erasing their original prophetic context.
