Life and Witness
The Newly Revealed Martyr
The earthly biography of Saint Phanourios was unknown for centuries. His veneration began after an ancient icon was discovered among ruined buildings on Rhodes, traditionally when the island was under Latin rule.
The icon bore the name Phanourios and showed a youthful soldier holding a cross. Around the border were scenes of successive torments, indicating that he had confessed Christ and completed his life through martyrdom.
What the Icon Revealed
The scenes portray interrogation, beatings, imprisonment, burning and the martyr standing unharmed in prayer. The Church receives this iconographic cycle as the principal witness to his passion; it does not invent a birthplace, family history or date that the sources do not preserve.
A church was restored in his honor, and devotion spread from Rhodes through Greece and the wider Orthodox world. His name, associated in Greek with revealing, contributed to the custom of asking his intercession when something has been lost.
Phanouropita and Intercession
The faithful often prepare a simple fasting cake called phanouropita and distribute it in charity after it is blessed. The custom is an offering of thanksgiving and almsgiving, not a magical transaction.
Traditions concerning prayer for the saint's mother vary and should not replace the central ecclesiastical truth: Saint Phanourios is honored as a martyr of Christ whose witness became known through a sacred image.
Shrines and Feast Day
The historic church dedicated to Saint Phanourios in the medieval city of Rhodes remains a principal place connected with his veneration. Churches bearing his name are now found throughout the Orthodox world.

From the Orthodox Synaxarion
The Orthodox Church does not supply an invented biography where the historical record is silent. Saint Phanourios is known through the ancient icon found on Rhodes, whose scenes portray his confession and sufferings, and through the enduring veneration of the faithful.
Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition
No ancient written life of Saint Phanourios survives. His veneration begins from the discovery of an icon on Rhodes depicting twelve scenes of martyrdom; every biographical detail beyond those scenes is therefore treated cautiously, and the custom of fanouropita is identified as later Orthodox popular devotion.
