The Wonderworking Icon

The Prousiotissa Icon of the Mother of God is treasured at the Monastery of Proussos in Evrytania. Local Orthodox tradition connects it with the period of iconoclasm and with its journey from Prousa in Asia Minor.

A young man who sought the icon was guided toward the wild mountain region by signs of light. The title Prousiotissa preserves the memory of Prousa, while the monastery became one of the most important Marian shrines of central Greece.

The Pillar of Fire and the Rock

The tradition relates that shepherds repeatedly saw a pillar of light in the ravine and discovered the icon in a cave. Marks in the rock are locally associated with the icon's miraculous arrival and the effort to move it.

These accounts are received as the sacred local tradition of the monastery. Their purpose is to direct pilgrims toward repentance, thanksgiving and the intercession of the Theotokos, not curiosity detached from worship.

Healings and National Veneration

Generations of pilgrims have attributed healing and protection to the prayers of the Mother of God before the icon. During times of epidemic, warfare and personal suffering, the Prousiotissa has been carried in procession with ecclesiastical blessing.

The monastery also preserves historical associations with the Greek Revolution and with Georgios Karaiskakis. Votive offerings testify to gratitude, though individual miracle claims should be presented only with responsible monastic or ecclesiastical confirmation.

Monastery and Feast Day

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Prousiotissa is built dramatically into the cliffs near Proussos and remains an active place of pilgrimage and prayer.

August 23 — Synaxis of the Prousiotissa Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos.

From the Orthodox Synaxarion

The Orthodox account of the Prousiotissa icon connects its arrival in Evrytania with a miraculous light and the establishment of its shrine. The honor given to the icon passes to the Mother of God, whose intercession the faithful prayerfully seek.

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition

The monastery, icon and living pilgrimage tradition at Proussos are ecclesiastically established. The icon's journey, pillar of light and marks traditionally connected with Saint Germanos are presented as the monastery's received tradition, not as modern laboratory findings.
