Life and Witness
The Great Desert Father
Saint Paisios the Great was born in Egypt in the fourth century and was dedicated to God from childhood. He entered the monastic life in the desert of Scetis and became a disciple of Saint Pambo.
Through obedience, fasting, silence and the Jesus Prayer, Paisios struggled against the passions and became a guide to many monks. His withdrawal from the world was joined to compassion for those seeking repentance.
Visions and Miracles
The life of the saint records manifestations of divine grace, including an appearance of Christ in his cell. The tradition that Paisios washed the Savior's feet emphasizes humble hospitality before the Lord.
He is also remembered for prayer on behalf of a disciple who had denied Christ and for discernment that restored the fallen to repentance. His wonders point consistently toward mercy, humility and salvation rather than spectacle.
Relics and Veneration
Saint Paisios reposed in great old age. His relics were later brought together with those of Saint Paul of Thebes and are venerated in the Monastery of Saint Paisios at Nitria according to the Coptic and wider Orthodox tradition.

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition
Paisios's Egyptian ascetic life is transmitted chiefly through the monastic hagiographical tradition associated with his disciples and later Synaxaria. Visions, extraordinary fasting and encounters with Christ are presented as spiritual testimony within that genre, while teachings on repentance and mercy are not converted into precise modern biography where no contemporary archive survives.
