Saint Nicanor was born in Thessalonica near the end of the fifteenth century and was raised in the Orthodox faith. After the death of his parents he distributed his inheritance and pursued monastic life.
He withdrew to Mount Kallistratos near the Aliakmon River, living in a cave with fasting, vigil and prayer.

Nicanor gathered brethren, established common life and cared for those who came seeking healing and counsel.

From the Orthodox Synaxarion
The Orthodox Synaxarion preserves the memory of Saint Nicanor's ascetical life in a cave, his care for the sick and his work for the restoration of the monastery dedicated to Saint George. These labors show how his withdrawal into prayer remained inseparable from service to the faithful.
Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition
The saint's late-fifteenth- and sixteenth-century life, ascetic cave and foundation of the Transfiguration Monastery at Zavorda belong primarily to the documented ecclesiastical memory of western Macedonia. The revelation and discovery of the icon of Christ and posthumous miracles are presented as the monastery's received tradition, while the surviving shrine and relics are distinguished from those narratives.
