Life and Witness
A Young Disciple
Saint Nestor was a young Christian associated with Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica. His life is closely joined to the witness of the Great Martyr, whose feast the Church celebrates one day earlier.
The Blessing of Demetrius
Before facing the powerful fighter Lyaeus, Nestor went to the prison where Demetrius was held and asked for his prayers. The saint made the sign of the Cross over him and foretold both his victory and his martyrdom. Nestor entered the arena trusting in the God whom Demetrius confessed.
Witness unto Death
When Nestor defeated Lyaeus, the ruler responded with anger and ordered the deaths of both Nestor and Demetrius. The Church commemorates Nestor on October 27. His story, preserved in the Synaxarion and the hymns of the feast, remembers the courage of a young believer who sought strength in prayer.
