Life and Witness
Bishop, Theologian and Martyr
Saint Methodius served as a bishop and teacher in the early fourth century, traditionally associated with Olympus and Patara. He defended the apostolic faith through preaching and careful theological writing.
His works affirm the goodness of creation, the resurrection of the body and the Christian calling to purity. He answered interpretations that weakened the Church's confession of bodily resurrection.
Martyrdom and Writings
During the final great Roman persecution, Methodius completed his episcopal ministry through martyrdom, traditionally by beheading. His death is placed near the end of the persecution of Diocletian and his successors.
Among the writings preserved under his name, the Symposium or Banquet of the Ten Virgins is especially known. The Church remembers learning and martyrdom together: theological speech was sealed by fidelity unto death.

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition
Methodius is known not only from hagiography but from surviving theological works defending creation, virginity and the bodily resurrection in dialogue with Origenist controversies. Ancient sources differ over whether his see was Olympus, Patara or another locality and over details of his death; these questions are stated openly, while his martyr veneration remains the Church's received witness.
