Life and Witness
Pilgrimage and Monastic Formation
Lazarus came from Asia Minor and received his early formation in a monastery. His desire to venerate the holy places led him to Jerusalem. He then entered the monastery of Saint Sabbas, where he became a monk and was ordained a priest.
The Community on Mount Galesius
Troubles in the Holy Land led him back to Asia Minor. He settled on Mount Galesius near Ephesus, initially living in solitude. Other monks gradually gathered around him, and a church dedicated to the Resurrection became a center of the community.
The Life of a Stylite
Lazarus undertook the ascetic life on a pillar, enduring the changing seasons in prayer. The Church remembers him as a spiritual guide and wonderworker. He reposed in old age in the eleventh century. His feast on November 7 honors the perseverance of a monk whose solitude also became a source of guidance for others.
