Life and Witness
Archdeacon of Rome
Saint Lawrence served as archdeacon under Pope Sixtus II of Rome and was entrusted with church property and care for the poor. During the persecution of Valerian, Sixtus and fellow clergy were arrested and martyred.
Lawrence desired to follow his bishop and was told that his own contest would soon come. He distributed the Church's material resources to those in need.
The True Treasures of the Church
Ordered to produce the Church's treasures, Lawrence gathered the poor, sick and vulnerable whom the Christian community served. He presented them as the Church's true treasure.
The act was not contempt for sacred objects but a Gospel declaration that Christ is encountered in the least of His brethren.
Martyrdom and Worldwide Veneration
Lawrence endured torture and death by fire, traditionally upon a heated gridiron. The Church remembers his courage without reducing martyrdom to later dramatic sayings.
The Basilica of Saint Lawrence Outside the Walls in Rome is associated with his tomb. August 10 — Holy Martyr and Archdeacon Lawrence of Rome.
From the Orthodox Synaxarion
The Prologue from Ohrid remembers Lawrence as the deacon entrusted with the Church’s material care. By presenting the poor as its true treasure, he joined charitable service to a fearless confession before the Roman authorities.
Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition
Lawrence's service as a Roman deacon and martyrdom during Valerian's persecution in 258 belong to the ancient and widely received ecclesiastical record. His presentation of the poor as the Church's treasure and the manner of his death on a heated gridiron are preserved by early Christian tradition, but the article distinguishes this devotional narrative from a contemporary civil trial transcript.
