Life and Witness
The Precious Cincture
The Orthodox Church honors the Cincture or Belt of the Most Holy Theotokos as a material link with the Mother of God and the mystery of the Incarnation. According to ecclesiastical tradition, the relic was preserved by the faithful and later brought to Constantinople.
It was placed in a precious reliquary at the Church of the Theotokos in Chalcoprateia. Imperial and ecclesiastical devotion to the relic became part of Constantinople's liturgical life.
The Healing of Empress Zoe
The received account relates that Empress Zoe, wife of Emperor Leo VI, suffered from severe illness or demonic oppression. After a vision, the sacred Cincture was brought to her, and she received healing through the intercession of the Theotokos.
In thanksgiving, the relic was adorned and solemnly returned to its reliquary. The feast proclaims that created matter may become a bearer of blessing because the Word truly became flesh.
Vatopedi and Worldwide Veneration
The principal surviving portion of the Holy Cincture is venerated at the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. Portions have traveled with ecclesiastical blessing for the consolation of the faithful.
The monastery provides blessed ribbons associated with prayer before the Cincture, especially to couples seeking the gift of a child. This practice belongs within faith, prayer and pastoral guidance, never as a mechanical guarantee.
