Life and Witness

Pilgrim and Ascetic

Saint Gerasimos was born in 1506 at Trikala in Corinthia to the Notaras family. He received education and then undertook long pilgrimages, visiting Constantinople, Mount Athos, the Holy Land, Sinai and other centers of Orthodox life.

In Jerusalem he served at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and was ordained to the priesthood. His travels were not tourism but preparation through worship, obedience and ascetic experience.

The Caves of Kefalonia

After returning to Greece, Gerasimos lived in a cave at Lassi on Kefalonia and later withdrew to the district of Omala. He practiced prayer, fasting and manual labor while becoming known for spiritual counsel.

He founded a women's monastery at Omala, called New Jerusalem, and guided its community with pastoral care. His teaching joined strictness toward oneself with mercy toward those who suffered.

Healings and Deliverance

Orthodox tradition especially remembers healings and deliverance from demonic oppression through Saint Gerasimos's intercession. These wonders continue to be associated with prayer before his incorrupt relics.

The processions of the saint's relics on Kefalonia are major events of local church life. Testimonies are received within sacramental and pastoral discernment rather than as entertainment or spectacle.

Monastery, Relics and Feast Days

His incorrupt body is venerated at the Monastery of Saint Gerasimos in Omala, one of the best-known Orthodox pilgrimage sites of the Ionian Islands.

August 16 commemorates his repose; October 20 commemorates the translation of his relics and is the principal local feast on Kefalonia.

From the Orthodox Synaxarion

The Prologue from Ohrid remembers Saint Gerasimos the New as an ascetic who combined strict spiritual discipline with compassionate care. His monastery on Kefalonia became a place of prayer, and the faithful continue to seek his intercessions, especially in affliction.

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition

Saint Gerasimos's sixteenth-century ascetic life, foundation at Omala and incorrupt relics are preserved by the Church of Kefalonia; August 16 commemorates the translation of his relics, while October 20 is his principal feast. Testimonies of deliverance and healing are reported as ecclesiastically received miracle accounts and never substituted for medical diagnosis or responsible pastoral and clinical care.
