Life and Witness
Life and Historical Setting
Saints Cosmas and Damian were brothers from Rome who received from God the gift of healing. They treated the sick without payment and proclaimed that healing came through Christ, bringing many people to the faith. Their former teacher, overcome by jealousy, led them into the mountains and killed them. The Church honors them among the holy unmercenary healers.
Miracles, Relics and Places of Veneration
The Roman pair must be distinguished from the similarly named Unmercenaries of Asia and Arabia. Their traditional burial place is Feremma, and their identity, feast and martyrdom are kept separate from the other pairs throughout the article.
Iconography and Spiritual Meaning
Orthodox iconography presents the saint with the Cross of confession. The image does not glorify suffering by itself; it proclaims fidelity to Christ, forgiveness of persecutors and the victory of resurrection over death.
Feast Day
July 1 — Holy Unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian of Rome.
From the Orthodox Synaxarion
The Prologue from Ohrid remembers Cosmas and Damian as physicians who accepted no payment because healing was offered in Christ’s name. Their death through the jealousy of a former teacher stands in contrast to their own merciful service.
Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition
The Roman unmercenaries must be kept distinct from the similarly named pairs of Asia and Arabia, whose feasts and martyrdom accounts are separate. Their free healing and Christian witness form the shared ecclesiastical core, while their death at the hands of a jealous former teacher and later miracles are identified as the Roman pair's specific Synaxarion tradition.
