Life and Witness

Leader of the Bodiless Hosts

The Holy Archangel Michael is named in Scripture as a prince and defender of God's people. His name means, ‘Who is like God?’—a confession that no creature may claim the glory of the Creator.

The Church honors Michael among the bodiless powers who serve the divine will. He is not worshipped as a god; he is venerated as a faithful minister who directs creation toward obedience to the Holy Trinity.

Scriptural Witness

The Book of Daniel presents Michael as a great prince who stands for God's people. The Epistle of Jude names him in conflict with the devil, and Revelation describes Michael and his angels fighting the dragon.

Orthodox teaching understands the fall of the demons as a free rejection of God through pride. Scripture and the Fathers do not authorize imaginative biographies of Satan beyond what has been revealed; therefore sensational details are not treated here as doctrine.

Miracles and Protection

The Orthodox calendar remembers the miracle of the Archangel Michael at Chonae on September 6, when the shrine and holy spring associated with his intercession were preserved from destruction.

Churches and monasteries dedicated to the Taxiarchs exist throughout the Orthodox world, including the celebrated monasteries at Panormitis on Symi and Mantamados on Lesbos. The faithful ask the Archangel's help while placing all hope and worship in God.

Historical Record and Ecclesiastical Tradition

Daniel, Jude 9 and Revelation 12 are the principal Scriptural passages naming Michael and define him as God's servant, prince and leader of the angelic host. The miracle at Chonae and other apparitions belong to distinct liturgical-hagiographical traditions; the page rejects magical or autonomous portrayals and makes clear that Orthodox honor of the Archangel is always directed within worship of God.
